yeah!

motheringspread

We had no idea! Picked this magazine out of the mailbox and almost simultaneously got a call from Kris saying she’d heard Feeleez was in Mothering. I quickly paged through and there we were! Yippee!

If you had to guess which of the kids above went on to become a fashion designer you’d pick the one in the pink shower cap right? Well that folks, is my sister, and you’re right, she is a fashion designer. But the reason I bring her up is because this blog is about feelings, and her clothing line, Filly, really celebrates feelings.

These clothes are made to feel good. And I know every designer says that, but I’m not kidding. There is not a snap, zipper, or button in a single piece of her clothing. Every item slides up or down over your body, and every bit of fabric is stretchy.

So that’s how the clothes feel. But how you feel while wearing them is another thing all together. Basically in one word: hot. This is the kind of hot that means you can still ride a bike, pick up your child, or nurse. You can live your life, feel good, and look good.

So that’s how you feel. But how Emily (my sister) feels while making these beautiful clothes is yet another layer. If she’s falling in love (see Fall 2009), if she’s suffering from heartbreak (see Fall 2008), or if she’s excited about moving (see Fall 2007), then her clothes will tell that story.

Emily has lived her entire life swayed by the intensity of her emotions. Now she runs her own business, and instead of shutting down her feelings to become the stoic career woman, she has found a way to let her heart continue to live it’s rich life. I find that commendable.

p.s The Echo look-alike in the front is me! (Of course.)

p.p.s If you want to follow the ebb and flow of Emily’s actually life her blog is a fun read.

p.p.s The scuba diver is my cousin Lesa, a fellow stay at home mom with an MBA in Hispanic Literature.

who are we?

feeleezcrew

It occurred to us that it is much more fun to follow a blog when you know who everyone is, so we thought we’d draw you a map. Feeleez is made up of the adults Kris, Natalie, and Nathan, and their children.

Kris: Kris and Natalie spent at least a year next to each other silently practicing Ashtanga yoga before actually having a real conversation. But there must have been some strong communication going anyway because once they finally did get rolling it was a match made in heaven and now they can not stop talking. Kris is married to Tim (a smoke-jumping, fire-fighting, lovely man) and they have Sascha and Elliott.

Elliott: Elliott is now 4. He has an amazingly low voice and a sweet, sweet, tenderness. He studies what he loves: climbing, football, hockey, hockey equipment, construction, with intelligence and intensity.

Sascha: is one. She loves food, balloons(popping them), squirrels, gymnastic feats, and blow up floatie tubes. She leans into life chest forward completely certain of herself and her world.

you can follow this sweet family here.

Natalie: is partners with Nathan. She abhors the term stepmother as it certainly does not convey the immense amount of love and connection she feels with Xi and Bella, whom she began to parent in earnest when Xi was 10 months and Bella was two and a half. Natalie and Nathan welcomed sweet Echo into the family and now they are five(!).

Nathan: is partners with Natalie, as mentioned before, and dear friends with Kris. Natalie strains to hear what they might be talking about while helping kids up or down some park apparatus because it is always fascinating. (Nathan is also a stellar life/parenting coach and can be reached at nmmctague@yahoo.com.)

Bella: is eight and a half. She is big in every way possible, in ideas, in emotions, in movements. She moves in and out of the house causing huge waves of excitement and energy. She loves fairies and magic.

Xi: is six. She is royal in her ways, hates it that she is younger than Bella, smart as a whip and not easy to read. She loves dialog(and will remember it forever), and finery like jewels and clothing.

Echo: is two. She reads minds, has an entire imaginary step-family (Mama Pom Pom, Daddy Cort-who died, a dog named Mister, and a cat named Island), and has an insatiable appetite for stories both written and verbal. She remembers anything anyone ever says, thinks, or does and constantly shocks all of us on a daily basis.

There is, of course, so much more, but this can serve as a basic map to get you started.

feelings and needs

Sweet little Echo today used the Feeleez in a whole new way! She looked at one of the sad Feeleez and said that she needed a hug, then pointed to the hugging Feeleez and put the two together.

To take the learning further than simply identifying feelings with your child, you can ask them what is the need. Needs are universal: safety, nutrition, play, movement, connection, meaning, contribution….

EVERY BEHAVIOUR IS AN ATTEMPT TO MEET A NEED.

the feeling ladder

Think of a ladder of feelings with low ones on the bottom and high ones on the top…bliss, joy, delight, gratitude. Keep this feeling ladder in your mind. You can create a real one by cutting up the Feeleez poster and putting them on the wall, or make the ladder with the game cards.

Whenever you are feeling something you don’t particularly enjoy, the low feelings, choose a thought that will move you one step HIGHER. Then, choose the next higher thought, and so on.

You will not only improve your mood, but you will shift your vibration and the Universe will respond by matching that vibration and life will keep getting more pleasing.
