polly-prickly

So your kid is looking at you like this. Where do you even begin? Hard to name this one, and let’s be honest, a series of “are you feeling mad?, “are you feeling angry?”, “are you feeling…?” might not be welcome. So what to do? In this case you might want to scroll through your mental list of what your child needs and start there. Here are some common needs:

empathy

love

safety

trust

belonging

air

food

movement/exercise

sleep

safety

shelter

touch

water

honesty

play

joy

humor

harmony

order

creativity

to matter

choice

freedom

independence

space

Space. Now that one might apply in this situation. You never know.

My daughter looks EXACTLY like that when I’ve asked her to do something she doesn’t want to do but needs to be done to get on with our day/schedule/be on time.

Space? Really?? But what about our schedule/time limit/gotta be on time??

I don’t know how I stumbled onto here, but I’m glad I did. Fodder, lots of fodder here…

…and thinking the next time I see this stance, this face, the once that says “you’re pissing me off with all your demands and schedules and I just wanna do what I wanna do” face, I’ll give both of us space…and choice (it caught my eye).

Wow, what a great place to come as a parent, thank you!

[…] doing that action, even when you have asked them not to, there is a very good chance that a strong need is their motivation. Look and listen closely, open your mind to strange possibilities and you just might be able to […]
